Gorgonidium intermedium (Bogner) E.G.Gonç.
SUMMARY
It was first described in the genus Spathantheum mainly because of the peculiar adnation of the entire female spadix and a small portion of the male spadix to the spathe. Also considering the presence of a lobed stigma, it was supposed it could be an unusual species of Spathantheum, but the chosen epithet intermedium clearly stated the intermediate aspect of this species, that could be also considered similar to Gorgonidium. The presence of strongly lobed connectives would also make it similar to other species of Gorgonidium (e.g. G. vargasii and G. mirabile). The reconstructed phylogeny of the tribe using associated molecular and morphological data has shown that the acceptance of Spathantheum intermedium would make Spathantheum paraphyletic. With Spathantheum intermedium transferred to Gorgonidium, the genus Spathantheum would remain w ith two species, (one of them very recently described; see Hetterscheid et al., in press) both with the spadix completely adnate to the spadix. Gorgonidium intermedium is only known around Cusco (Peruvian Andes), usually above 3,000 m.
