The aroid flora of Thailand was studied by Hu (1968), a work in which she described Arisaema hirsutum S. Y. Hu, based on a fruiting specimen. This species was recognized in Arisaema by its 'naked and contiguous female flowers, unilocular, 2- or 3-ovulate ovaries and orthotropic [sic] ovules on a basal placenta'. She noted, however, that it was a very unusual species in its 'hirsute indumentum, extremely short peduncle and irregularly ribbed and angulate [sic] immature berries'; she had no flowering material to hand to confirm her placement of this species in the genus Arisaema. Recently we were able to examine a good flowering specimen of this species collected in Thailand and this showed it to be a species of the genus Typhonium with some interesting resemblances to the neighbouring genus Sauromatum
