During a study of the south Indian Araceae involving taxonomy, cytology and palynology (Thiyagaraj 1994), an Arisaema was collected at the southern end of the Western Ghats in Tirunelveli-Kanyakumari. It could not be identified with any of the 17 known south Indian species, and is described here as new.
