Philodendron canaimae G.S.Bunting
SUMMARY
Terrestrial herb. Stem more or less horizontal, elongate, however internodes short in the distal part, more or less hidden by the cataphyll remains. Cataphyll drying in situ, gradually bursting and breaking up. LEAVES: Petiole somewhat erect, subterete, sulcate adaxially, margins of the channel angular, 38-55 cm long, 1 cm in diameter at halfway, many pinkish-purple spots and marked with purplish brown towards the apex. Leaf blade erect on the petiole, coriaceous, usually elliptic or elliptic-ovate, 32-41 cm long, 19-21 cm wide, truncate at the base or broadly obtuse, shortly acuminate at the apex (1.5 cm); Adaxially glossy, intense green, midrib convex, 1 cm wide at the base; primary lateral veins 7-9 on each side, orientated at an angle of ca. 50-60º, slightly sulcate in life, almost invisible when dry; Abaxially matte, midrib yellowish, pink-spotted, pimary lateral veins slightly raised in life, barely visible when dry, minor veins several, well marked. INFLORESCENCES solitary (?). Peduncle pale green, 11 cm long. Spathe 15 cm long, tube 5.8 cm long, externally white, dorsally red-spotted, internally blood-red, blade white on both surfaces, at fruiting, 23 cm long, tube 8.5 cm long, becoming green. Spadix somewhat overtopping spathe, stipitate, stipe 0.5-1 cm long, female zone 2.8 cm long, sterile male zone1.3 cm long, fertile zone 9.5 cm long, female zone in fruit 6.3x3.2 cm. INFRUCTESCENCE: Berries 0.7-0.3 cm. Seeds elliptic in outline or elliptic-ovate, 0.8-1 mm long, red-brown, densely white-striate.
