Philodendron dyscarpium R.E.Schult.

Robust sub-shrub, up to 6 (often 4) feet high, growing on sandstone. Stem erect, subarborescent, more or less 6 cm at the base, densely leafy, lower internodes elongate, up to 25 cm long, upper ones short. LEAVES: Petiole thick, dark green, semiterete, up to 60 cm long, broadly canaliculate in the upper part, conspicuously sheathed at the base, with cataphylls. Blade rather thick, coriaceous, dark green, oblong-ovate or often ovate, apex shortly acuminate, base rounded, up to 40 cm long, 25 cm wide, midrib prominently thick straw-yellow-green, 1 cm in diameter, lateral veins very dense, all equal, running from the midrib at an acute angle, ascending. INFLORESCENCE: Peduncle thick, thickened towards the apex, dark green but blood-red spotted, usually 10-15 cm long, 1 cm in diameter. Spathe green externally or yellowish green and blood-red or purple spotted, internally intensely blood-red, sub-triangular, apex acute, somewhat convolute, slightly constricted halfway, up to 15 cm long expanded, 6 cm wide towards the base, tube 3-3.5 cm in diameter, bulbous-inflated at the base with (' cum spathae auricula obturato') apex usually long-acuminate.
