Philodendron ochrostemon Schott
SUMMARY
Stem slightly 2-angular, with one of the faces flattened and slightly sulcate, from pale green to dark green, lustrous, becoming straw colored and dull, 0.4-0.9 (-1.1) cm in diameter in the flagellum and 0.6-1.8 cm in diameter in the non-flagellate stem. Cataphylls of the flagellum greenish, discolored, veins of the cataphylls very slightly discolored from the cataphyll. Internodes 1.0-6.5 (-19) cm long, up to 20.5 cm long in the flagellum. Roots from cream to cream slightly greenish to yellowish green with the apex red when young, becoming brown with time, 1.0-2.5 mm in diameter. Prophyll of floral sympodium persistent, membranous, green, darker inside becoming brown with time, 6.5-13.0 cm long and 1.0-1.7 cm wide at the base. LEAVES: Petiole green glossy to somewhat glossy, slightly striate with darker striations on both sides, rounded on the underside, and flattened to rarely slightly sulcate on the upper side, (5.8-) 12.0-22.0 cm long and 0.2-0.4 cm in diameter at the apex, free at the apex for 0.3-2.9 cm. Sheath concolorous, somewhat lustrous, with darker striations, elongate up to 0.3 cm from the base of the blade, (5.8-) 12.7-20.8 cm long and 0.6-0.8 cm wide, closed with raised margins, slightly expanded at the base when flowering. Leaf blade slightly ovate-oblong to oblong-lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate, (8.0-)20.0-36.0 cm long and (2.8-) 5.0-8.7(-15.4) cm wide, green from very to slightly lustrous on both sides when young, to lustrous on the upper surface, and darker green and lustrous to slightly lustrous on the lower surface, membranous to slightly papery, apex beaked, base from slightly cordate to rounded to obtuse to attenuate, margin entire. Midrib, in relation to the blade, slightly discolored on the upper side and discolored, darker on the lower side, impressed on the upper side, prominent on the lower side. Primary lateral veins concolorous, impressed on the upper side and prominent, but not very evident on the lower surface, 4-6 pairs. INFLORESCENCES: Floral sympodium with 1-2 inflorescences. Peduncle green with darker striations to paler at the apex, angled, 1.5-5.0 cm long and 0.8 cm in diameter. Spathe 10.5-16.5 cm long, with a slight difference between the tube and the blade, blade green, yellowish green to cream externally, and internally cream with yellowish resin canals, tube externally pale green with dark green dorsal lines from the base to halfway, internally cream with yellowish resin canals. Spadix 13.1 cm long, stipe present 1.3-2.0 cm long, decurrent on the spathe, 1.7-2.3 cm long; fertile male zone cream (4.5-) 5.6-11.0 cm long and 0.8-1.1 cm in diameter; sterile male zone slightly darker cream, 0.5-1.0 cm long and 1.0-1.9 cm wide; female zone greenish, 4.0-5.5 cm long and 1.6 cm in diameter. Stamens 2-3 per flower, (1.1-) 2-2.5 mm long and 1.0-1.5 (-1.8) mm wide at the apex. Staminodes 4.0 mm long and 1.5-2.0 mm wide at the apex, thin at the base. Gynoecium with a greenish ovary, 4.0 mm long, and 1.2-1.5 mm wide, 3-4 locules, ovules several per locule, 0.6 mm long, axile placentation, stigma globose, brown. INFRUCTESCENCES: Mature, 7.0-8.0 cm long and 2.3-3.4 cm in diameter. Immature fruit green, and mature fruit from yellowish green to yellow, 7.0-8.0 mm long and 2.0-2.5 mm wide in the central region, all seeds observed were galled.
