Philodendron ornatum Schott

Hemiepiphytic plant, forming a rosette in the mature flowering phase. Roots 0.3-0.5 mm in diameter, reddish when young and brown when adult. Internodes slender and elongate when young, in the adult phase they are 2-4 cm long, 1-3.3 cm in diameter. LEAVES: Prophyll 7-10 cm long, 3-4 cm wide, pinkish when new, marcescent and persistent when older, brown-grey-brown, membranous to fibrous. Petiole 20-66.3 cm long, 0.2-0.7 cm in diameter, convex adaxially with margins more or less angled, rounded abaxially, with dispersed purplish rings of extrafloral nectaries, apex densely verruculose and generally wine-coloured. Sheath inconspicuous in sympodial leaves. Leaf blade ovate in outline, apex acuminate to obtuse, apiculate, base cordate, texture nearly membranous, upper side glossy green, margin light green, midrib lighter than blade, lower side light green, semi-dull, primary lateral veins reddish when young; Anterior division 15-49.7 cm long, 15-36.4 cm wide; primary lateral veins 7-13 on both sides, interprimary veins present in the basal portion; posterior divisions 6-12 cm long, 12-36.4 cm wide, rounded, with a parabolic sinus, acroscopic primary lateral veins 2-3, basioscopic 1-2. INFLORESCENCE: 1-3 per floral sympodium. Peduncle 6-11 cm long, 0.4-0.7 cm in diameter, cylindric, smaller than the spathe. Spathe 12-17 cm long, acuminate at the apex, constricted; tube 5-7 cm long, 2.3-3.2 cm in diameter, externally light green, internally pink to carmine with resin canals; blade 7-10 cm long, 1.4-2.2 cm in diameter, externally light green, internally pink with resin canals. Spadix ca. 13 cm long, subsessile, decurrent; female zone 3.7 cm long, 1.7 cm in diameter, cylindric; intermediate sterile male zone 2.4 cm long, 1.2 cm in diameter, subcylindric, wider at the base; fertile male zone 6.9 cm long, 1.6 cm in diameter, acuminate towards the apex. Flowers: Stamens 3-4 per flower, 2.35 mm long, 1.35 mm wide. Staminodes 2.0 mm long, 1.75 mm wide. Gynoecium 3.5-4.0 mm long; ovary 2.85 mm long, 1.5 mm in diameter; locules 4-5 per ovary; ovules 20-25 per locule; placentation axile; style 0.75 mm long, 1.25 mm wide; stigma expanded to 0.8-1.25 cm wide. INFRUCTESCENCE: Not seen.
