Philodendron rhodoaxis subsp. lewisii (Araceae)
Internodes 1.6-7.0 cm long. LEAVES: Petiole 13.5-33.5 cm long, P/L=(0.40-) 0.45-0.68 (-0.74), the unsheathed portion 0.3-4.0 cm long. Lamina with IQI=(3-) 6-16 (-19), thinly coriaceous to subcoriaceous or weakly chartaceous, matte or velvety (satiny) to semiglossy above; primary lateral veins 13-30 or more per side, 0.6-3.6 cm apart. Cataphylls (5.4-) 10.6-15.8 (-20.4) cm long. INFLORESCENCES: Peduncle 3.7-8.5 (-11.2) cm long, P/S=0.34-0.62 (-0.89). Female portion of spadix 2.2-3.9 (-4.2) cm long (to at 6.2+ cm in fruit), F/S=0.19-0.36 (-0.43)9 apical sterile male zone evident or not, to 2.0-3.7 cm long, Female flowers 1.6-2.5 mm long.
Northern Costa Rica (and probably extreme southeastern Nicaragua) through Panama and Pacific South America south to Los Ríos Province, Ecuador.
Most commonly in Tropical Wet Forest and Premontane Rain Forest life zones, but also collected from Tropical Moist Forest, Premontane Wet Forest, and (in Colombia) Tropical Rain Forest.
The aerial roots are used by the Cayapa Indians of Ecuador as string, "when nothing better (is) available'' (Barfod et at. 48241). The label of Tipaz et al. 1487, an aberrant specimen discussed above, records a use by the Awá Indians of Ecuador for treatment of snakebite.
