Arisaema barbatum Buchet
SUMMARY
Deciduous herb to 0.5 m tall. Subterranean stem a subglobose tuber, to 5 cm across × 2.5 cm high, brownish. Pseudostem 10–25 × ca 1.2 cm at the base, olive-green with light pink mottling and faint dark green longitudinal stripes. Leaf solitary; cataphylls to 16 cm long, dark pink with olive-green mottling and slightly prominent pale pink dots; petiole ca 25 × ca 1 cm at the base; leaf blade trifoliolate; leaflets ovate, shiny green; margin entire, apex acuminate often ending in a short arista; central leaflet ca 20 cm × 8 cm, base cuneate with a petiolule ca 1 cm long; lateral leaflets asymmetrical, slightly shorter than the central, base convex with a petiolule ca 0.5 cm long. Inflorescence emerging after the leaf, and held at leaf level; peduncle shorter than the petiole, to 12 cm long × 5 mm across, white-green with faint darker stripes; spathe tube cylindrical, ca 5 × ca 1.5 cm; white-green with dotted purple stripes; spathe mouth margins widely recurved, ca 5–6 mm wide; spathe limb suberect, ovate-oblong, 4–7(–10) × 4–4.5 cm, yellow-green, paler at the base, translucent, with numerous, thin darker longitudinal veins, these prominent outside, limb acuminate, ending in a short thread; spadix appendix exserted from the spathe tube, but shorter than the spathe, 4–6 cm long, tip subulate, covered with many, bristle-like, filiform, flexuous projections, these 1–3 cm long, appendix naked in the middle part, at the base 2 mm wide, sessile and with a few neuter flowers, these 2–5 mm long and inserted just above the fertile part; fertile zone staminate or pistillate, ca 2 cm long; staminate flowers loosely arranged, 2–3-androus, anthers cream, subsessile; thecae dehiscent by a carmine, elongate pore; pistillate flowers: ovary bottle-shaped, green; stigma penicillate, with a short style. Infructescence on an erect peduncle, cylindrical, to 7 × ca 2.5 cm; fruits 10 × 8 mm, prismatic, apically flattened with black stigmatic remains, red-orange when ripe, to 4 seeds per berry. Seeds globose, 3 mm diam.
