SUMMARY
Plant predominantly rupicolous or terrestrial growing on thin soils. Stem semi-prostrate, internodes very short, 2 - 4 cm diam.; roots numerous, long, 3 - 5 mm diam.; cataphylls deltoid, when dried brittle and fibrous. LEAVES: Petiole cylindric, erect, green when mature, rose-coloured when young, 20 - 80 cm long, ca. 3 mm diam; sheath thickened, green, 1 - 1.5 cm long, geniculum yellow or green, 1.5 - 2.5 cm long, ca. 5 mm diam.. Adult leaf blade ovate-peltate, thick, coriaceous, deflexed, adaxially green, yellowish green abaxially, 12 - 30 cm long, 8 - 20 cm wide, wider in the lower third, apex acute-acuminate, midrib more prominent on the adaxial surface, ca. 4 mm [wide] at the base, attenuating towards the tip, basal veins normally 5, sometimes 7, more-or-less immersed, the first pair, the most internal, arises at ca. right angles to the midrib and then joins with the marginal veins near the leaf apex, the second pair, more external, run backwards at an angle of ca.135 deg. To the midrib and then curve back towards the apex and eventually run out into the margin near the leaf apex, the single most basal vein branches once or twice towards the leaf base and then disappears into the margin; primary lateral veins [of the midrib] ca. 6 - 10 on each side, unequally distant from one another, connected to the first pair of basal veins, interprimary lateral veins as numerous as the primaries; marginal veins 2, serving as collectors of the rest; margins flat, cartilaginous, gently revolute. Inflorescence erect or slightly pendent, as long as the leaves, 20 - 80 cm long. INFLORESCENCE: Peduncle cylindric to subcylindric, green to rose-coloured, 3 - 5 mm diam. Spathe rose-coloured, lanceolate to slightly falciform, weakly decurrent, 5 - 6 cm long, ca. 1 cm wide at the base, apex acute. Spadix subsessile, dark purple at anthesis, cylindric, 6 - 10 cm long, ca. 6 mm diam. at the base. Flowers protogynous, 3 flowers visible in the principal spiral, 4 - 5 flowers visible in the alternate spiral. Outer tepals triangular, inner tepals smaller, pentagonal. Pistil not exserted, cylindric to slightly rhombic, green at the base, crowned with a purple spot. Stigma ellipsoid hardly exserted. Ovary bilocular, 1 ovule per locule, anatropous with axile almost apical placentation. Stamens with broad filaments, as long as the tepals, anthers whitish yellow, with 2 elliptic-oval thecae slightly divergent basally, forming a ring around the pistil, pollen white. INFRUCTESCENCE pendent, spathe more-or-less reflexed, persistent, mature fruits obovoid, translucid at the base, crowned with a purple spot. Seed flattened-convex, circular to oboval, testa verrucate, greyish-brown,blackish when dried.
