Amorphophallus atrorubens
Tuber short, subglobose to irregularly elongate, 3–7 × 2–4 cm, base with few short branches. Leaf solitary; petiole short, to 15–20 cm × 5–15 mm, smooth, turgid, dark greyish or reddish brown; leaf blade to 50–80 cm diam., rachises unwinged; leaflets elliptic or elongate-elliptic, 5–10 × 3–6 cm, acuminate, adaxially slightly glossy green. Inflorescence solitary, long pedunculate; peduncle 13–23 cm × 4–8 mm, dirty greenish brown to dark reddish brown, smooth, glossy; spathe erect, broadly ovate, 3–11 × 3–11 cm, base truncate, exterior pale bronze-green with brown veins, apex purplish brown, or wholly pale green, interior pale greyish green or whitish, margin slightly or more distinctly concave, apex broadly acute, base within smooth; spadix sessile, longer than spathe, 4–16 cm long, erect or slightly bending forward; pistillate flower zone cylindrical, 5–20 × 5–12 mm, flowers slightly distant; ovaries depressed, 3 × 1.5 mm, pale green with upper part purplish or entirely purplish; style ca 1 × 1 mm, ridged, purplish; stigma large, depressed, 2.5 × 1 mm, moderately or strongly and deeply trilobed, lobes conical, surface papillate-flaky, white; sterile interstice 4–10 × 5–17 mm, staminodial; staminodes broadly conical-cylindrical, rhombic in outline, base slightly constricted, apex with a distinct depression or with a 3– to 5–rayed groove representing the borderlines of sterile stamens, ca 5 × 3 mm, off-white; staminate flower zone elongate conical, 1.5–4.5 cm × 7–16 mm, lower flowers somewhat distant, upper ones congested, or all congested; staminate flowers 4–5-androus, pores apical, fused at their apex to a large single apical opening, connective broad, pale green or white, usually extending down to the lateral sides, very thin and rupturing at staminate anthesis; appendix short conical, 2–8 × 1–2.3 cm, laterally compressed or terete, apex obtuse, surface smooth, off-white with a faint greenish flush. Infructescence cylindrical, 5 × 3 cm, berries crowded; fruit ovoid, 10–14 × 8–12 mm, ripening deep blue.
Thailand. Endemic.
Heavy shade at base of limestone outcrops.
