SUMMARY
Tuber subglobose to depressed globose, to ca 10 × 4–9 cm, producing several, easily detached, fusiform offsets seasonally, root-scars small but swollen. Leaf solitary; petiole to ca 80 × 1–2.3 cm, smooth, dull dark olive-green or very dark with slightly irregular to narrowly diamond-shaped, pale greenish spots, or very dark brown with indistinct, paler, dark centred, elongate diamond-shaped spots; leaf blade moderately divided, 20–110 cm diam., rachises winged all over or wingless in the lower half; leaflets obovate to elliptic-lanceolate, 7.5–23 × 2.8–6 cm, strongly acuminate, base slightly decurrent, margin sometimes with a narrow, reddish seam and sometimes strongly crisped-undulate. Inflorescence solitary, long pedunculate; cataphylls to 25 cm long; peduncle 23–110 × 0.9–2.5 cm, fleshy or turgid, appearance as petiole; spathe erect, concave, ovate, sometimes broader than long, obtuse or acute, 8.5–40 × 5–30 cm, base shortly convolute, opening entirely to the base shortly after staminate anthesis, exterior whitish or pale green with darker green spots, the base sometimes purplish with grey spots or very pale pinkish, all colours paling quickly at staminate anthesis, base interior smooth or with a few scattered or more numerous, minute, shallow, punctiform warts; spadix subequalling the spathe or shorter than spathe, 7.5-23 cm long, stipitate; stipe 0.5–2 cm long; pistillate flower zone cylindrical, fusiform-cylindrical or conical, 0.5–4 × 0.7–1.8 cm, flowers congested but often more distant in lower half; ovaries depressed, angular or orbicular in cross-section, 3–4 × 2 mm high, pale green, or pale brownish flushed near the apex; style 1–1.5 cm × 5–8 mm, pale green, sometimes flushed dirty brownish or darker brownish at the apex; stigma disciform or slightly conical, orbicular in outline with a shallow central depression, or shallowly bi– or trilobed, 1–1.5 × 0.4–0.7 mm high, surface echinate-verrucate, very pale dirty yellowish; staminate flower zone fusiform or obconical, often laterally compressed, 8–30 × 7–20 mm, flowers congested; staminate flowers 3–5-androus; stamens white; appendix more or less contiguous with staminate flower zone or with a strong constriction at the base, elongate-fusiform, or strongly inflated and then elongate-conical, or strongly laterally compressed, 6–15 × 1.5–5 cm, obtuse or subacute, smooth or shallowly grooved or with several larger, shallow, irregular depressions, base with a few (echinate) staminodes, off-white, producing a strong scent of fresh carrots/fruit during pistillate anthesis. Fruit ripening blue.
