Amorphophallus staudtii (Engl.) N.E.Br.
SUMMARY
Tuber flat globose to globose, 2-6 x 1.5-5 cm. LEAF emerging after flowering, to 1.5 m high. Leaf stalk 20-100 cm long or longer, smooth, purple and spotted green or green with fine sriation. Terminal leaflets elongate to elliptic, 10-20 x 5-8 cm, green. Cataphylls 2, 17 and 10 cm long, the inner one twice as long as the peduncle. INFLORESCENCE solitary, shortly peduncled, emmerging before the leaf. Peduncle 4-10 cm long, 0.5-1.5 cm in diameter. Spathe 6-17 cm long; divided by a distinct constriction into a bulging tube and an open, one-sided, triangular, acutely attenuating limb. Tube 3-6 x 3-8 cm; globose to broady ovoid ('oval'); outside light purple to greenish; inside basally dark purple, with tightly packed hair-shaped emergences; [emergences] 0.5-2 mm long, becoming more dispered towards the top. Open limb tilted erect, 4-11 cm long, one-sidedly shortly triangular, acutely attenuating, brown to purple, margin ± slightly undulate. Spadix sessile, 7-22 cm long, 1/2 times longer than the spathe ('1/2 mal länger als die Spatha'). Pistillate zone cylindrical, 0.5-1.5 x 0.5-1.2 cm, flowers congested. Staminate zone obconic to ovoid ('oval') , 1-2.2 x 0.5-1.5 cm, flowers congested. Appendix erect, long conical, 6-19 (-24, fide Ntépé Nyame 1988) cm long, 0.6-2 cm in diameter at the base, acutely attenuating ± evenly, brown purple, surface rough. Staminodes absent; sterile zone between pistillate and staminate zone absent; ratio of pistillate to staminate zone 0..4-0.5 : 1. Pistillate flowers 2-3 mm long; ovary ± globose to ovoid ('oval'), 1.5 x 1-2 mm, green to light purple, uni- to bilocular; stigma sessile to subsessile, 1-1.2 x 0.6-0.7 mm, circular to broadly elliptic ('oval') from above, flattened circular from the side, unlobed or with two small circular humps, gold yellow to brownish; stigma hardly visible or at the most 0.2-0.4 mm long. Staminate flowers 1-1.5 mm long; anthers ovoid to cubical, 0.7-1 x 0.8-1.8 mm, yellowish to cream; filaments short, less than 0.2-0.5 mm; pores apical, one broadly elliptic ('oval') pore per theca; connective channelled and sunken, darker than the anthers. INFRUCTESCENCE not known. Pollen inaperturate, exine smooth. Smell not known.
