SUMMARY
Terrestrial herbs, usually occurring in damp soils; stem rhizomatous, young ones bright green with spreading white roots, internodes 0.5-1 X 0.3-0.5 cm. LEAVES 4-6 per plant; prophylls weakly two-keeled, 8-10 cm long, 1-1.3 cm wide at base, persisting intact for a long time, then completely deciduous; petioles sulcate adaxi-ally, 11-21 X 0.2-0.4 cm, sheath 1-1.5 cm long, up to 0.5 cm wide; leaf blade dark glossy green, with the midrib paler adaxi-ally, paler and glossy aclaxially, drying yellow brown, 19-20 X 7-9.5 cm, apex acu- minate, acumen up to 1.5 cm long, base truncate to subcordate, primary lateral veins 5-7 per side, mostly arising at an angle of 40-45°, the first pair of primary veins usually retrorse. INFLORESCENCE: solitary; peduncles 6-10 X 0.3-0.5 cm; spathe 5-6 cm long, lemon green outside, whitish green inside; spadix stipitate, 4-5.3 cm long, stipe 6-7 X 5-6 mm; fertile male portion 2-2.5 X 0.5-0.6 cm, white, cune-ate at apex; sterile male portion white, 1 X 0.7-0.8 cm, female portion light, green, 0.8-1.2 X 0.5-0.7 cm, cylindrical. Male flowers prismatic, 1.5 X 1 mm; staminodes obpyramidal, 1 X 1-1.5 mm; gynoecium 1-1.5 mm long, stigma 1-1.3 mm diam., ovary 1-1.6 mm diam., locules 3-4, ovules 8-12, axillary attached, funicles shorter than the ovules, without noticeable tri-chomes (although they occasionally occur at the placenta). INFRUCTESCENCE: Berries unknown.
